How to Perform

Setup

Adjust the seat so the handles are approximately level with the mid-chest and the machine’s shoulder pivot is reasonably aligned with your shoulder joints. Sit with your back supported, feet firmly on the floor and trunk controlled. Grasp the handles with a closed grip and maintain a small, comfortable bend in the elbows. Select a starting position that creates chest tension without forcing the shoulders into an uncomfortable range.

Execution

Bring the handles forward and inward in a controlled arc by moving the upper arms across the chest. Keep the trunk supported, shoulders controlled and elbow angle approximately unchanged. Finish without allowing the weight stack to slam or forcing the shoulders forward. Return slowly until the arms reach the selected starting position, controlling the outward movement throughout.

Important Considerations
Machine designs differ in handle position, pivot location and resistance profile. Seat height, starting range and load should therefore be adjusted for the individual and for the specific machine. A greater stretch is not automatically more effective; the return should stop before shoulder position or comfort is compromised.

Anatomy
The pectoralis major is the principal muscle producing shoulder horizontal adduction during the machine chest fly. Its clavicular and sternocostal regions converge onto the humerus and contribute across the movement, although their relative contribution can vary with upper-arm angle and individual anatomy. The anterior deltoid and coracobrachialis assist the movement, while muscles controlling the scapula and trunk help maintain an effective base.

Biomechanics
The exercise occurs primarily in the transverse plane as the humerus moves from horizontal abduction toward horizontal adduction. Because the elbow angle remains relatively constant, it is classified as a predominantly single-joint shoulder exercise. The pectoralis major acts concentrically as the handles close and eccentrically to control the return. The machine constrains the movement path and reduces external stability demands, but the resistance experienced through the range depends on the machine’s lever geometry and cam design.

  • Adjust the seat or starting-position mechanism
  • Use one arm at a time if the machine permits
  • Substitute a chest press or cable variation when better tolerated
Safety Note
Use a range of motion that allows controlled shoulder positioning without pain. Do not force the arms excessively behind the torso in pursuit of a greater stretch. Stop the exercise if sharp pain, sudden weakness or unusual shoulder or chest discomfort occurs.
