What Olympic Weightlifting Is

Two Competition Lifts.
One Complete System.

Olympic weightlifting is built around two competition lifts: the Snatch, which moves the bar from the floor to overhead in one continuous movement, and the Clean & Jerk, which brings the bar first to the shoulders and then overhead.

The lifts may look fast and complex, but every movement can be broken down into clear positions, manageable phases and progressive drills. You do not need to arrive strong, flexible or experienced—the coaching begins from the level appropriate to you.

The Coaching Principle Technique first. Load follows.
The Competition Lifts

The Snatch and the
Clean & Jerk.

Both lifts take the barbell from the floor to overhead, but each demands a different combination of speed, strength, timing and control.

01 One Continuous Movement

The Snatch

The Snatch moves the bar from the floor to overhead in one continuous action. Effective technique combines rapid acceleration with the ability to move underneath the bar and receive it in a stable overhead position.

02 Two Connected Phases

The Clean & Jerk

The bar travels from the floor to overhead in one continuous, explosive movement. The aim is not simply to pull the bar higher—it is to accelerate it, move efficiently underneath it and receive it in a strong overhead position.

What the Lifts Develop

More Than
Strength Alone.

Olympic lifting develops physical qualities that work together, not strength or speed in isolation. Every successful lift requires you to produce force, control positions and coordinate the whole body under load.

01

Strength

Build force through the legs, hips, trunk and upper body while maintaining efficient positions under load.

02

Power

Learn to express strength rapidly through explosive extension, acceleration and decisive movement under the bar.

03

Coordination

Improve timing, balance and whole-body sequencing as multiple actions combine into one efficient lift.

04

Mobility & Stability

Develop usable movement range alongside the control required to receive and stabilise the bar safely.

05

Athletic Transfer

Support acceleration, jumping and rapid force production when Olympic-lifting methods are programmed around your sport.

Your Coaching Progression

A Technical Skill Built
Step by Step.

You will not be rushed into full lifts or heavier loads before the foundations are ready. Coaching progresses from assessing your starting point to developing reliable technique that can continue improving over time.

01 Starting Point

Assess

Review your movement, mobility, strength experience and current lifting positions to establish the appropriate starting point.

02 Understand

Learn

Understand the essential positions, movement sequence and purpose of each phase before combining them into a complete lift.

03 Practise

Drill

Practise manageable segments with an empty bar, light loads and targeted variations that reinforce effective movement.

04 Integrate

Lift

Combine the phases into the complete Snatch or Clean & Jerk while maintaining control, timing and consistent positions.

05 Improve

Refine

Use coaching feedback, selected variations and video review where appropriate to address the details limiting your technique.

06 Develop

Progress

Increase training demand gradually as your technique becomes more consistent, confident and repeatable under appropriate load.

Who This Coaching Is For

Start From Where
You Are Now.

You do not need to arrive with perfect mobility, advanced strength or previous Olympic lifting experience. Your starting point determines the coaching, not whether you are suitable for it.

Individual Coaching Your starting point shapes the plan.
01

Complete Beginners

Learn the fundamental positions and movement patterns progressively, even if you have never performed an Olympic lift before.

02

Strength & Gym Clients

Add the Olympic lifts to your existing training without abandoning the strength work and goals you already value.

03

Athletes

Use appropriate Olympic-lifting methods to support rapid force production, coordination and physical preparation for your sport.

04

Experienced Lifters

Refine technical details, address recurring limitations and continue developing the lifts through structured, ongoing coaching.

How Progress Is Managed

Review the Lift.
Refine the Plan.

Progress is not measured only by adding weight to the bar. Your technique, positional control, consistency and confidence are reviewed alongside the loads you lift.

The Coaching Loop
Observe Review Adjust Progress
01

Technical Feedback

Receive clear feedback on the positions, timing and movement details that have the greatest influence on your lift.

02

Session Records

Track the lifts, variations, working loads and technical priorities used during your coaching and training sessions.

03

Programming Adjustments

Modify exercise selection, volume and loading as your technique develops and your current needs become clearer.

04

Video & Digital Support

Use video review where appropriate, with programme delivery and training records supported through Trainerize when included in your coaching plan.

Progress and Proof

Progress You Can See.
Coaching You Can Trust.

Progress in Olympic lifting is not defined by one personal best. It is reflected in better positions, more repeatable technique and the ability to handle appropriate loads with greater control.

What Progress Can Look Like

Technical progress before heavier weight.

01
Better Positions

More control in the start, pull, receiving and overhead positions.

02
Greater Consistency

Fewer missed repetitions and more repeatable movement under appropriate load.

03
Appropriate Load Progression

Weight increases when technique and readiness support it—not simply because the programme says so.

04
Increased Confidence

A clearer understanding of the lifts and greater confidence practising them independently.

Coaching Foundation

Qualified experience behind every progression.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions Before
You Start?

You do not need to arrive knowing the lifts. These answers explain how coaching begins, how the movements are progressed and which starting route may suit you.

The Short Answer Beginners are welcome.

Your starting point is assessed before the complexity or load of the lifts is increased.

Is Olympic weightlifting safe for beginners?

The lifts can be introduced safely when the movement, range of motion and load are appropriate for the individual. Coaching begins with manageable positions, drills and light loads before progressing towards the complete lifts. No form of physical training is entirely risk-free, but progression and technical supervision help manage that risk.

The lifts can be introduced safely when the movement, range of motion and load are appropriate for the individual. Coaching begins with manageable positions, drills and light loads before progressing towards the complete lifts. No form of physical training is entirely risk-free, but progression and technical supervision help manage that risk.

No predetermined strength or mobility standard is required. Your current movement, mobility and training experience are assessed first. The starting exercises and range of motion are then adapted to what you can perform effectively.

No. Olympic lifting can be practised as a technical strength discipline, included within general training or used selectively within athletic preparation. You do not need to compete or participate in another sport to learn the lifts.

The lifts can be programmed alongside squats, pulls, presses and other strength exercises. The appropriate frequency and volume depend on your goals, experience, recovery and the rest of your training programme.

Choose ongoing coaching if you want to develop the Snatch and Clean & Jerk progressively as part of a structured training plan. Choose the Advanced Workshop if you want one focused 90-minute session dedicated to the Clean, Snatch or Jerk.

In-person Olympic weightlifting coaching takes place at JD Gyms Edinburgh Chesser. Ongoing and hybrid support can be discussed during your free consultation, depending on your training needs and goals.

Age alone does not determine whether the lifts are appropriate. Your movement, training history, health and goals are more relevant. The exercises, range of motion and loading can be adjusted, and suitable variations may be used when the complete competition lifts are not the best starting point.
